Emma Watson

Emma Watson is a great example of a more modern Standard British accent, often described as Modern RP. Her speech is clear and polished, but includes contemporary features you may hear in younger British speakers.

Step 1: Watch the clip – listen carefully 🎧

FIRST LISTEN

Watch the clip without analysing everything. You can watch it 2–3 times.

What did she say?

I eat well. I do yoga. I do medit(..). I do all the things, right, but I think I was using those as a way of mitigating how much stress I was under.

Step 2: Watch MY EXPLANATION

NOW LISTEN TO MY EXPLANATION

Watch the clip once again paying attention to the features listed below. I will explain them for you ⬇️

Listen for...

01

Intrusive R

Listen to “I do yoga(r), I…” and “I do meditation…”. Emma inserts an /r/ between two vowel sounds even though there is no R in the spelling. This helps the words flow smoothly together.

02

Her modern /t/

Pay attention to the /t/ in mitigating. Emma uses an affricated /t/, which can sound a little like [ts]. This is a very modern feature you may hear from younger speakers of standard British English.

03

How much stress

In “how much stress”, notice the strong puff of air after the /h/ in how. Also listen to how much prominence Emma gives the phrase. Together, the aspiration and emphasis make how much really stand out.

Step 3: Watch the clip again

CAN YOU HEAR IT?

Listen again. This time, focus on the pronunciation features from the list above.
