Rowan Atkinson

Rowan Atkinson has a very clear, traditional Standard British accent. His careful articulation and distinctive rhythm make individual pronunciation features particularly easy to notice.

Step 1: Watch the clip – listen carefully 🎧

FIRST LISTEN

Watch the clip without analysing everything. You can watch it 2–3 times.

What did he say?

I doubt that he will reappear but,um, but you never know, you must never… but you know, you must never say never again.

Step 2: Watch MY EXPLANATION

NOW LISTEN TO MY EXPLANATION

Watch the clip once again paying attention to the features listed below. I will explain them for you ⬇️

Listen for...

01

Silent B

In “I doubt…”, the B in doubt is completely silent. A perfect reminder that English spelling doesn’t always tell you what you’re going to hear.

02

The /ɪə/ diphthong

Pay attention to the final syllable of reappear. Listen for the movement between two vowel sounds rather than one steady vowel.

03

The weak MUST

In “you must never”, must is much weaker than you might expect. The vowel is reduced toa  schwa and the final /t/ becomes very difficult to hear.

Step 3: Watch the clip again

CAN YOU HEAR IT?

Listen again. This time, focus on the pronunciation features from the list above.
